I have an eating disorder that is affecting my whole life! As a student I cannot afford private counselling but recognise that I must start speaking with somebody asap! My worry is that by contacting my GP the process will be slower and that details will be entered onto my doctors notes. I don't wish to apply for future jobs or insurances and declare that I have been treated for depression etc - please help.

Eating disorders are serious and can make you very miserable as you have recognised. There may be some disadvantages to seeing your GP and only you can make that decision. But, consider the possibility that he/she may be able to help you in a variety of ways, some of which could be quite speedy, depending on what resources are to hand.
Does your university offer a student counselling service? You could take advantage of that or, depending on your circumstances, you might be able to ask your parents to help with some private counselling. If your weight is very low, then it is important that you seek medical advice as you could become physically ill.
Remember, many people have a history of depression in their medical records; it doesn't necessarily interfere with your future plans. Anyway, wouldn’t the possibility of getting better mean that it was worth it?
Have a look at our article on anorexia nervosa as you will find some useful contacts there.
