Patterns of drinking behaviour are often formed during student years. If you have ever felt concerned about how much you are drinking (or friends have expressed concern), now may be a good time to do something about it. Make a start by answering the following questions about yourself.
- Have you ever felt you should cut down on your drinking, and failed?
- Do you drink because you have problems and/or the drink helps you to face up to stressful situations?
- Do you avoid being honest with others about your drinking, or feel annoyed if people comment on your drinking?
- Do you ever get into trouble when you are drinking, or feel guilty and regret what happened when you were drunk?
- Do you often get drunk when you drink, even when you do not mean to?
- Have you ever begun to drink in the morning, before work or lectures, to steady your nerves or help to get rid of a hangover?
- Do you drink when you get mad at other people?
- Do you sometimes have to miss lectures and work because of drink? Are you getting low marks for this reason?
If the answers are yes to some or all of the questions, and you have been like this for a while, you could be developing a drinking habit that is likely to adversely affect your health.
